“Panormus conca aurea suos devorat alienos nutrit”

“Palermo, golden basin, devours its own and nourishes foreigners”. This Latin saying tells a layered history of the city. One where outsiders come to the city to enjoy its rich culture and vibrant scenery, while locals may struggle. This quote can refer to modern tourism and economic hardship in Sicily, but this is no new phenomenon. The city itself has a long history of being controlled by outside forces (The Spanish, French, Normans, Arabs). However, I have yet to meet a local who would live anywhere else.
